The Postergali

XVI century

Two large marble panels used as dividers called “postergali”, or even “plutei postergali”, that, following some works at the Cathedral taken out in 1947/48, from the Compagnia Grande  were placed at the sides of the presbytery.

They are the work of the Carrarese sculptor Francesco Bergamini and, going back to the XVI century, are the result of a very fine inlay work, with frames and delicate foliage.

Pulpit

1544

By the artists from Carrara Domenico del Sarto, Nicodemo da Carrara and Tommaso Sarti. In a frame on the balcony, towards the nave, is a bas-relief of The Redeemer among the four books of the Gospel.

The staircase is made from a single block of marble. The corbel, that is the support of the balcony, has the shape of a bulb, divided in seven petals. It is obtained from a single block together with the boulder behind it, placed against the pillar, that clearly has the purpose of supporting it.

Notice the decoration inside the petals that, to be better sculpted, required the work of left-handed sculptors, especially when the room was limited as in the case of this artifact.
