The Nativity Scene
The artistic marble nativity scene was created at the behest of the then Abbot, Monsignor Raffaello Piagentini, in the early 1990s when a group of marble craftsmen and enthusiasts from the city set up a nativity scene entirely in Carrara marble in the transept leading from the Cathedral to the Baptistery, set in the scenic valley dominated by the imposing viaduct of the so-called Ponti di Vara di Fantiscritti.
This work has always attracted considerable interest, not only for its intrinsic religious value, but also as an element of attraction for the thousands of tourists who visit the abbey complex of Carrara every year.
Since December 2024, this work of art has changed location, in fact set up in the room behind the presbytery of the Compagnia Grande, which can be accessed through two Baroque portals framing the high altar.
The new location is now much more interesting and enhances both the crib itself and the room that houses it.
The realisation was possible thanks to the various volunteers who dedicated their time and energy.
Specifically, thanks are due to Sergio Giorgi, lzzatura expert, Francesco Siani, the Romagnoli family (for carpentry work), Stefano Cucurnia (for ironwork), Claudio Tavarini.
